Matt Haimovitz Solo Cello Recital

March 14 @3:00pm

Internationally acclaimed cellist Matt Haimovitz brings his signature blend of virtuosity, imagination, and artistic curiosity to West Hartford in an intimate solo recital. Celebrated for his adventurous programming, Haimovitz is known for pairing beloved masterworks with compelling contemporary voices.

In this program, he performs timeless music by Johann Sebastian Bach alongside selections from The Primavera Project, creating a rich musical dialogue that bridges centuries and highlights the enduring expressive power of the cello. Inspired by Botticelli’s iconic Renaissance painting Primavera, the project features newly commissioned works by leading composers reflecting themes of renewal, nature, and transformation through a modern musical lens.

Having appeared on major international stages, including performances associated with the Venice Biennale, Haimovitz brings a distinctive and forward-looking artistic voice to our community. This performance offers a rare opportunity to experience one of today’s most innovative musical thinkers in a program that is both deeply rooted and strikingly fresh.

Belonging: A Celebration in Song

The Amelia Classical Music Series presents Belonging: A Celebration in Song as part of West Hartford’s 250th anniversary commemoration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Through music — one of the most powerful expressions of identity and hope — this program reflects on the many journeys that lead people to call a place home. Founded in West Hartford by immigrant soprano and Artistic Director Zhanna Alkhazova, ACMS offers an evening honoring heritage, resilience, and community.

Featuring an all-female ensemble of acclaimed vocalists — Meredith Hansen (Metropolitan Opera), Madison Marie McIntosh (Florida Grand Opera), and Zhanna Alkhazova (Sarasota Opera) — the program pairs beloved arias by Puccini and Verdi with American songs shaped by diverse cultural traditions. Together, these works explore longing, courage, devotion, and the search for belonging.

Through the power of the human voice, this concert celebrates the stories that unite us — and the community continually shaped by those who bring their voices, history, and dreams to its song.
